45 Caliber Southern Mountain Rifle Kit by Andy Cook
|
"This is my first build and I was nervous. The kit was great and I watched the videos several times each. The build went fairly smooth and took about 10 evenings after work to complete. It is a curly Ash stock in 45 caliber. The only power tools used were a drill and heat gun. The wood has two coats of aqua fortis followed by two coats of traditional oil finish. Then several coats of paste wax were applied. The gun is a tack driver, with groups cutting one ragged hole at 50 yards! My thanks to Jim and Katherine for the kit and answering questions along the way. "

"I bought the kit on consignment at Dixon’s. It’s a .40 cal walnut stocked rifle. It was my first time building a rifle and while it’s not fancy I’m very happy with the turnout. The rifle is a really sweet shooter. The quality of the kit and the smoothness of assembly was amazing for my first build as well. I used super blue on metal parts then a scotch brite pad to bring it back to a dull gray. On the wood I used laurel mtn forge walnut stain and two coats of Chamber’s oil finish to seal it. Had such a great time putting this together..." Zach Zucatti

Fancy Maple by Brad Hatch
"I admit, I was a bit nervous at first, having never built a rifle, but this kit was a breeze. I was surprised at how well it came out and I learned quite a bit along the way.
The instructions were easy to follow and the customer service was excellent! I also made the pouch, horn, and patch knife in the photos to go with this rifle... I aged the metal parts using a process that involves acid and peroxide and I finished the wood with aqua fortis and linseed oil. Then, I sealed everything with paste wax." |

Custom side plate modification by customer. Extra Fancy Maple
"Aqua Fortis stain, linseed oil, and cold brown. I did a few modifications including pewter nose cap, entry pipe, side plate, and patch box.
It was easy, this is a great kit. The CNC inletting is very nice. I’ve built a few rifles from blanks but this sure saved on the time. The lock, barrel, and castings are perfect as well. "

"Thank you so much for your wonderful class. I had a great time. I learned so much and the week went by so quickly. I wanted to share a few pictures of my rifle after finishing the lock and aging it and adding 3 more coats of sealer...My 40 cal worked perfectly..."
